Times are Changing....

This is the first picture of our school's view, which I made about a month before the opening. I will always remember this view. It gives you that sense of space and freedom that is hard to find in cities and that fits so well with the yoga practice.

Laruga Glaser Ashtanga Yoga Intensive

Laruga Glaser Ashtanga Yoga Intensive

....

..

The workshop with Laruga Glaser happened a while ago, but we would like to thank Laruga again for the time with us. We have also compiled a selection of pictures. For those of you who do not know the Ashtanga Yoga, here is a brief description.

Ashtanga Yoga is the translation of the eighth-century yoga, of which the asanas, the physical exercises, represent a branch. You can read more about the other seven branches here.

A series of successive serieses, of fixed poses, are practiced.

Before practicing youchant the opening mantra. Even here you can feel the intensity of the practice. We recorded it at the workshop. Thanks to Laruga for allowing us to use the audio files here!

Om

aum Urklang, Symbol des höchsten Göttlichen (Hauptwort) Amen (Adverb)

The opening chant of Ashtanga is translated on the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute website as:

I bow to the lotus feet of the Gurus,
The awakening happiness of one’s own Self revealed, Beyond better, acting like the jungle physician, Pacifying delusion, the poison of Samsara.
Taking the form of a man to the shoulders,
Holding a conch, a discus, and a sword,
One thousand heads, white,
To Patanjali, I salute.

The two verses of the chant come from different sources. The first verse is part of a longer poem called the Yoga Taravalli written by Adi Sankara, and is said to be one of Krishnamacharya’s favorites.

The second verse is part of the Patanjali Invocation, which is often chanted before chanting the Yoga Sutras. According to Geeta Ivengar:

‘The authors of [this] invocation are actually unknown….However, some traditional books mention that abahu purusakaram was written by King Bhojadeva in 1, 100 AD, author of Rajamartanda Vrtti a commentary on the Yoga Sutras.

The Mantra was the initiation on all three days, afterwards Laruga led us through the First Series, on the third day through parts of the Second Series.

Die lange Nacht des Yoga in Bildern/ The Long Night of Yoga in pictures

....

..

We would like to thank the "Yoga for All EV" for organizing the "Long Night of Yoga" last Saturday. The long night took place in Berlin for the first time, the proceeds serve a charitable purpose and are used to teach yoga for refugees, yoga in the women's house, yoga in eating disorders, yoga for mourners, yoga and dreary education and psychosensible yoga.

For a donation of 10 euros you got a little ribbon that allowed you to enter more than 20 yoga schools in Berlin.

The classes were kept short. We taught four 45 minute units. Here the evening in pictures.

We started the evening with a quite demanding FLOW class (Vinyasa Flow). A class for more advanced yogis, all of which brought a sweat..

Three day Ashtanga Yoga Workshop witch Chuck Miller 5.-7. May 2017

Three day Ashtanga Yoga Workshop witch Chuck Miller 5.-7. May 2017

We are very excited that Chuck Miller is coming for a three day workshop to Yoga Rebellion! Chuck was one of the first Westerners who studied Ashtanga Yoga with Pattabhi Jois and he later on co-founded YogaWorks in Santa Monica. In this workshop he focuses on the following:

Standing authentically.
Using the practice of Samasthiti to find a more natural approach to all asana practices.
Using Surya Namaskara (sun salutations) and standing posture practices to understand how our Samskaras (impressions/imprints in the deeper structure of the mind) drive us.
Clearing the Samskaras is Nirodha and the purpose of practice.
We are left with a sense of ease in our body, clarity in our mind.

For more info please go to our event page.

There are still a few spots available! Please contact us at info@yogarebellion.com.

Yesterday we had an amazing third day with Laruga Glaser at Yoga Rebellion. Part four and five of the workshop was called "Backbending with Ease" and "Intermediate Series Introduction". And back we bent!

Many thanks to Laruga for this inspiring time! A big thank you to all our fellow yogis who showed up with lots of enthusiasm! What a great group of people. It was a pleasure to meet every single one of you! Without Laruga and you overcoming quite a few obstacles to get to Berlin because of the strike at the airports this workshop wouldn't have been possible. It shows again that with determination anything is possible There are more images to come in the next few days!

Love,
Laura & Carsten

Warum praktizieren wir Yoga? / Why practice Yoga?

Warum praktizieren wir Yoga? / Why practice Yoga?

....

Warum also praktizieren? All der Schweiß, all der Aufwand, wofür?

Praxis lehrt uns sehr viel.

..

In a few days, Laruga Glaser coming to Berlin to give a three-day Ashtanga Yoga Intensive Workshop, which we are looking very much forward to!

Laruga is one of the most well known Ashtanga Yoga teachers.

When you see her practice, you believe that the gravity has no influence on what she can do on the yoga mat. Her practice is of an ease and grace that is hard to find.

But as so often, when we attemt to master something, that one day is done with ease and apparently no effort the process has to do with hard work.

In Ashtanga Yoga it can take years before you can do certain asanas / exercises and that only if you practice 6 days per week, 1.5-2 hours per day.

Some days are easy, other days you believe you spend the first day on the mat. The yoga poses also don’t get easier, because as soon as one can perform a pose, there is the next more difficult pose waiting for you.

One does not master Ashtanga Yoga either. There is room for improvement in every exercise. You can go deeper into the pose, breathe better, improve the execution. Once a series, a set sequence of exercises is completed, the next more difficult series follows.

So why practice? Why do we go through the asanas / physical exercises, on both good and bad days? All the sweat, all the effort, what for?

For us on the mat, as in life it is about letting go. What Ashtanga Yoga can show us is that it does not matter what we achieve with our practice. It is about practicing.

When we see Laruga practicing, it is not about her being able to lift herself into a handstand without effort. It is about the respect for all the hours she has spent with practicing to make these poses possible.

Practice teaches us very much. It teaches us perseverance, consistency, to overcome fear and to make the impossible possible. It shows us that we can achieve anything, be it on the yoga mat or in life, when we work on our abilities.

In today's world where we are accustomed to get things without much effort, where we can download an app within seconds to our smartphone, where we order every product online and get it delivered within a few days, Ashtanga Yoga is a way through focus and perseverance to show that these attributes are still valuable in today's fast-moving and short-lived world, and that growth and deeper experiences can only be achieved with commitment, time andpractice.

The experiences we make on the mat can then be applied to other areas of our lives. Be it relationships, friendships or professional development, in all these areas we can learn from yoga that there will be good as well as bad days but it is worth to stay with it and not give up and that the experiences we make on the way are well worth worth the effort.

Laruga is in Berlin from the 10th-12th. March. You can find out more about the workshop here.

Warum 108 Sonnengrüße? / Why 108 sun salutations?

....

Man sagt, in Ägypten stünden 108 Pyramiden.

Also warum 108 Sonnengrüße? Kein besonderer Grund!

..

We are looking forward to our 108 sun salutations event with live music, this Saturday at 1 pm. Many of you have asked why 108 sun salutations are being practiced. Here is a brief explanation:

The meaning of the number 108:

In many temples of India, the number 108 appears again and again. For example stairs, windows and altars.

The ancient secret teachings of the Indians, the Upanishads, are officially composed of 108 individual texts, as are 108 Purana texts.

The Sanskrit alphabet consists of 54 syllables, each with a female and a male side, that is, 108.

The angles of the contiguous lines in a pentagon (or in the inner pentagon of a pentagram) are exactly 108 degrees. The 108 is also linked to the golden section of Da Vinci by the Pentagon: the side of the pentagon in relation to its diagonal corresponds to the golden section.

It is said that there were 108 pyramids in Egypt.

The Indian gods each have 108 names. (Some even 1008, which means "infinitely much"

The diameter of the sun is 108 times the average of the earth. The distance from the sun to the earth (149.6 million km) is about 108 times as much as the diameter of the sun (1.39 million km). These two facts have already been known to the seers (Rishis) in ancient India (about 4000 years ago) and have now been confirmed by modern science.

In the doctrine of tantra one speaks of an average of 21600 breaths daily. One of these is solar (Surya) and the other lunar (Chandra). If we divide half 10800 by 100, we come to 108. Therefore we should repeat a mantra 108 times, the force will be a hundredfold, and we fill the day with the mystical power

The volume of frozen water rises to 108%.

These also correspond to the 108 pressure points which exist in some Asian martial arts.

Stonehenge is 108 feet in diameter.

Shiva dances as Nataraj (dancer) his Tandava (Divine Dance) in 108 different variants.

An official baseball is sewn with exactly 108 stitches.

The Nepali Parliament has 108 seats.

The geometrical scale of the Cathedral of Chartres, which is supposed to conceal the mystery of the Templars, is based on the 108th century.

A person so relaxed by meditation that he only needs 108 breaths a day is almost enlightened.

"Jain 108" was the first person with a number as a surname. Where there are many Sadhus and Swamis in India who use the number 108 or 1008 in the title and there are masters who were given names by their pupils.

there are certainly 108 explanations for the number 108!

So why practice 108 sun salutations? No particular reason! Just because it is challenging and fun. But it is also a mystical figure and therefore will be a special afternoon.

We will be supported live by master drummer Sinka Abdoul Aziz, who will help us to get through the finish line:

He was born in Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. Very early, he learned singing and music from a Griot family. In several West African countries, he met other cultures and traditions and deepened his musical skills in Djembe, Doun, Talking Drum, Calebasse and N'goni. Since 2002, Aziz is based in Germany and founded LANAYA with his brother Ibrahim, to convey the culture of his homeland. The band is modernizing and enriching the rich Manding culture with styles, creating their own musical genre. Thus the band acquired a special reputation in the German multicultural music scene. In 2005 he was the first African artist to perform at the UNESCO Sharq Taronalari Festival in Uzbekistan. As a percussionist in Interkunst, a project against violence and racism, he toured Germany. Since 2006, Aziz has regularly performed with DJ Avieras in the House scene of Lithuania. The formation TRIO DJEKAFO toured in 2008 through Germany and Switzerland.

In 2008 he conducted music workshops at the Oneaka Dance Company in Charlotte, North Carolina / USA. In 2009 he initiated an ambitious project: BEN KADY (peace is good). The ensemble of musicians from about 15 countries presents itself in its extraordinary social, cultural and musical variety. Openness, tolerance, courage and talent are key to this successful project, which Aziz plans to establish every year in Berlin. In Berlin, Aziz performs solo or with his musicians at high-ranking events: Opening of the African film festival AfriKamera and the IAAF World Athletics Championships (2009), as well as on the Fanmeile of the Football World Cup 2006.

In September 2009 the TV station ARTE broadcast the documentary project "24 hours Berlin", in which one of the main protagonists is accompanied by one day as a musician.

We look forward to seeing you!

LARUGA GLASER ASHTANGA YOGA WEEKEND INTENSIVE WORKSHOP MARCH 10-12 2017

We are very happy to be able to let you know that Laruga Glaser has followed our invitation and will give a three-day workshop at Yoga Rebellion Berlin. She is one of the world's well known and very experienced practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga. She began the practice of this beautiful style of yoga as early as 1998 and studied with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandchildren for a long time in Mysore, India, where she received an authorization to pass the centuries-old line of Ashtanga to her students.

Her practice is characterized by a feminine lightness, peace and extraordinary strength. It will surely be very enriching to learn from her and thus deepen our individual practice.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to our beautiful school Yoga Rebellion Berlin between the 10th and 12th of March. The cost of the workshop is 300 Euros and includes more than 10 hours of personal training with Laruga Glaser.

The workshop is taught in English and includes the following:

Vinyasa Integration (2.5 Hours)

In this workshop special attention will be focused on moving with conscious awareness, in union with conscious breath, otherwise known as vinyasa. Trouble shooting areas of instability that may

be present, you will delve more thoroughly into how to build strength, with care and attention, building upon internal alignment. Focused points of attention will include practical application of

Tristhanam (posture, breath, gaze) into each movement, promoting a calm center and accessing sense withdrawal, known as pratyahara. Learn to activate and open the energy channels of the

body without strain. Discover balance, support and integrity in strength-based postures such as techniques for jumping back and jumping through as well as structural breakdown of challenging poses and transitions.

Primary Series in Detail

Yoga Chikitsa

Primary Series, otherwise known as, Yoga Chikitsa or yoga therapy, is the foundation all the sequences of the Ashtanga Yoga system are built upon and thus highly important. Not only is Primary Series the most important series but also preps the body/mind to open to greater states of awareness, concentration and stability. Learn to find steadiness and ease within each posture as we further investigate the intelligence behind the sequencing and the important application of dristhi, bandhas and breath. In addition, special attention will be focused on moving with conscious awareness, proceeding with conscious breath, otherwise known as vinyasa. Trouble shooting areas of instability that may be present, learn how to thoroughly build strength, with care and attention, building upon internal alignment. This workshop is appropriate for new and established practitioners and is broken up into two workshop sessions.

Primary Series - 1st half (2.5 hours)

Beginning with Dandasana and working up to Navasana.

Primary Series - 2nd half (2.5 hours)

Picking up from Bhuja pidasana and finishing with Setu bandasana.

Backbending with Ease: Liberate the Spine (2.5 Hours)

The paradox of backbending is that we must be firm and soft at the same time, uniting the energy of strength and surrender. Learn the basic components of backbending with integrity to the natural flow of the body. In addition, learn to understand the concept of active release. When actively releasing, we experience the use of grounding mechanisms to establish the downward flow of energy while fully utilizing the breath to then be able to expand and deepen. In this workshop learn the foundational techniques that allow the body to find its depth and strength while at the same time letting go. For all levels.

Intermediate Series Introduction (2.5 Hours)

Nadi Shodana

Intermediate Series, otherwise known as nadi shodana, meaning nervous system cleansing, builds upon the culmination of energy and purification within the practitioner built from the foundation of Primary Series. With deeper backbends and forward bends as well as arm balances, the Intermediate series integrates the use of opposing forces to garner greater unity and strength, both mental and physical, while opening the internal light of awareness within each individual. This workshop is designed to introduce students to the physical, energetic and mental faculties of Intermediate series, appropriate for those who have a solid understanding of Primary series.

Days of Yoga Blogpost

Days_of_yoga0007.jpg

....
Vor einigen Tagen haben Uli und Dana vom Berliner Yoga Blog "Days of Yoga" eine unserer "Open Strength" Klassen besucht. Ihr Blog Post ging gestern online:

http://daysofyoga.de

A few days ago Uli and Dana from the Berlin based yoga blog "Days of Yoga" visited one of our "Open Strength" classes. Their blog post went online yesterday:

We realised that we still have to work on our class description. Uli and Dana had expected a led class. At the end the self practice enabled them to work on specific poses.

Come by and try out our "Open Strength" (Mysore) classes yourself! 😀 Here you can find our class schedule.

Thank you Uli and Dana!

Yoga Tanz Workshop / Yoga Dance Workshop

..

Yoga as much as dance is about letting go and surrendering to the flow of movement. To us "Free Play" is the goal in yoga, in dance and in daily life. It's about being completely in the here and now. While moving, we do not have the possibility to let our thoughts roam and either bring us into the past or into the future.

In this two-hour workshop Laura combines her experience in Ashtanga/Vinyasa Yoga with her long experience as a professional dancer in ballet and contemporary dance. Among other places she worked and studied with Rudra Bejart in Lausanne, Martha Graham School and Ensemble in New York and Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montreal.

She has taught dance in countries such as Scotland, England, Italy, Switzerland and Germany at universities as well as public and private schools.

This workshop is aimed at both beginners and advanced students.

The workshop takes place on 10/08/2016 at 2 PM. Price is 20 Euros.

..

Last week Laura and I spent a wonderful yoga weekend at the Salvey Mühle in the Uckermark, where we in cooperation with the Vorspiel Verein gave a Yoga workshop.

The weekend could not have been nicer and it gave us the chance to teach and integrate Alingn, Stretch, Flow and Strength classes in a row.

Upon arrival on Friday evening we taught a Align yoga class from 8-10 PM and had a delicious dinner. Next morning we started at 8 am with a two hours Stretch class, a hearty breakfast and an unplanned long walk in the pristine nature of the Uckermark, which led us as far as to the Oder river, the polish boarder to Germany.  Another two hour flow class followed, then a fantastic dinner, which was then followed by one or two Gin & Tonics and quite a few songs by the campfire.

But nothing stopped our Vorspiel yogis from stepping on their mats the next morning at 8 am to end the yoga part of the weekend with a half first Ashtanga series (Strength 1) class.

Thanks for a great time and the wonderful food! Thank you for always giving everything and the many interesting conversations!

If you’re interested we continue Friday in a week. We are organizing the second yoga weekend at Wunderland from 19-21.08.2016 at Wonderland in Teetz. There are still a few spots available. Please let us know if you’re interested.
